It's one of the great weeks of the racing year with York's four-day Ebor meeting under starters orders on Tuesday but anyone planning a bet must tread wary in my opinion. Season after season my worst days punting have been when the ground gets heavy and that's exactly the description of the going at York at present.
I have backed Mad Rush at 9-1 for the Tote Ebor which is on Wednesday but that was the middle of last week when conditions were just on the easy side and far from the bog-like terrain that awaits the runners now.
The word 'heavy' also features in the going report ahead of today's fascinating card at Leopardstown and the suggestion is to look across the Channel for a wager today and row in with Tamayuz 2.50pm at Deauville where it's just good to soft.
I am a big fan of Raven's Pass and the selection's defeat of that runner in the Prix Jean Prat last time out gives Tamayuz obvious prospects of winning another Group 1 prize today in the Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard Jacques Le Marois -- phew!
