Talking Horses: Best bets for Wednesday plus our tips competition

Today’s best bets, by Greg Wood

Several of the races on the Flat at Kempton and Lingfield today are more valuable and competitive than the majority of contests on turf during the summer. They include a six-furlong handicap at the Surrey track which was one of the strongest of the winter last year and promises to be just as interesting this time around.

Twelve months ago, it was Tarooq (2.30) who proved best suited to the strong gallop, finishing well from off the pace to collar Hawkeyethenoo in the closing stages with Lancelot Du Lac, who is in the field again today, back in third. Lancelot Du Lac is 6lb better off for about a two-length beating, which should put the two horses very close today, but Tarooq is a very talented performer around this track and trip when the race is run to suit him and is well worth an interest at around 13-2.

The front-runner Dr Red Eye (2.00) went off too hard last time out but still kept on well to finish fourth and may not have much competition for the lead today, while, at Kempton, Anglophile (6.20) may be the pick of Charlie Appleby’s two runners in the feature event, which is worth £60,000. Solidarity is apparently Appleby’s prime contender according to jockey bookings with Adam Kirby in the saddle, but Anglophile has some strong form to his name, too, including when third in a good time over this track and trip back in May.

Also at Kempton, Spinning Cobblers (3.40) should extend his winning sequence in the opener.

Tipping competition, day three

Our winners so far:

Monday

Waltz Darling 14-1

Benefit In Kind 11-4

Don’t Have It Then 7-1

Tuesday

Milansbar 12-1

Aficionado 9-4

Arden Dennis 11-4

And our leader is:

Rivercity +25.75

... who was already in front before finding Milansbar. But melonk and TL127 (both +22) are breathing down his neck, while GForce1 (+16) is not far off.

Today, we’d like your tips, please, for these races: 2.30 Lingfield, 2.40 Leicester, 6.20 Kempton.

This week’s prize is a pair of tickets to the William Hill King George VI Chase, generously offered by the sponsors themselves, along with a £50 bet on the famous Boxing Day race at Kempton.

As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. If you have not joined in so far this week, you are welcome to do so today, but you will start on -6.

In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.
