11.50am King undecided on Medermit Betfair run
Tony Paley: Alan King is set to make a late decision on whether he runs Medermit in Saturday’s competitive Betfair Chase at Haydock.
The Grade One-winning chaser was off the track for nearly two years before returning in February, but ran well when fourth in the Punchestown Gold Cup and then filled the same position on his seasonal reappearance in the Charlie Hall Chase at Wetherby at the start of this month.
King stated in his Racing Post Weekender column on Wednesday morning: “Medermit is in at Haydock. I’ll have a word with the owners. The other option for him is to wait for the Hennessy Gold Cup a week on Saturday.”
King also had some disappointing news to report as he confirmed that both Valdez and Montbazon would be forced to miss this season on advice from the trainer’s vets.
Wednesday’s best bets, by Tony Paley
The feature race of today’s racing is at Kempton tonight when the Surrey track hosts a Listed race. Captain Cat (6.25) was an excellent fifth in the QEII Stakes on Champions Day at Ascot and has the form at a higher level to suggest he can go close in this contest. Mon Cigar (1.30) is the other runner on the all-weather that appeals as a wager this afternoon at Lingfield. He just failed to break his duck over track and trip last time out and this looks an ideal opportunity or him to get off the mark.

This week’s prize is a pair of tickets for Tingle Creek Chase day at Sandown on Saturday 6 December. The two-mile Grade One is always one of the highlights of the season but, if you can’t make it that day, we can offer you tickets for Friday 5 December instead (also at Sandown). If you don’t win, you can buy tickets here.
As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. If you have not joined in so far this week, you are welcome to do so today, but you will start on -6.
In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.
