Today’s best bets, by Greg Wood
Two Flat meetings and three over the jumps feels like an odd balance for August, but it does offer something for everyone and, at Musselburgh, Green Howard (4.00) should appeal to those who like in-form horses with an obvious chance at the weights and proven ability over track and trip.
Rebecca Bastiman’s gelding is not likely to be improving at the age of seven but posted a useful performance when second at Ripon earlier this month and has a serious chance if he can reproduce that today. He was a winner off a 2lb lower mark over this course and distance last September and should get the strong pace he needs to produce his best form.
Tourtiere (3.30) was an impressive course and distance winner earlier this month and should be able to cope with a 7lb rise in the weights. Ada Misobel (2.30) required a drop to selling company to get off the mark at Catterick last month but the time of the race was fair for the grade and she may now have the confidence to follow up, while Warm Order (6.45) is a solid favourite for the sprint handicap at Wolverhampton this evening.
The Kvilleken (4.10) can extend his winning sequence to three at Stratford, while The Bay Bandit (6.00) stands out at Sedgefield.

Today, we’d like your tips, please, for these races: 4.00 Musselburgh, 5.40 Tipperary, 7.45 Wolverhampton.
This week’s prize is a copy of Value Seeker by Anthony Gibson, in which the author offers his system for identifying value bets from “statistics allied with form”, leading to picks that are “overlooked by the general betting population”. It’s the sort of book which may have insights to offer that could help your own strategy, although we certainly don’t recommend adopting anyone else’s system blindly. If you don’t win this competition, you can read more about the book and order it here.
As ever, our champion will be the tipster who returns the best profit to notional level stakes of £1 at starting price on our nominated races, of which there will be three each day up until Friday. Non-runners count as losers. If you have not joined in so far this week, you are welcome to do so today, but you will start on -9.
In the event of a tie at the end of the week, the winner will be the tipster who, from among those tied on the highest score, posted their tips earliest on the final day.
