Talking Horses

There are several good reasons for setting the video to record the second division of the mile maiden race at Newbury today. It brings together a number of well-regarded two-year-olds, all thought capable of winning good races, if not this year then next. Mark Johnston's newcomer Roman Republic comes with a tall reputation, and it is surely significant that he is still among the entries for the Dewhurst Stakes, while Decorum and Skanky Biscuit are also said to go well.

So far as betting goes, support for these newcomers could see Gibb River (3.50) go off at a tempting each-way price. Peter Chapple-Hyam's colt has had a run, shaping well in a 7f maiden over the course last month. I gather he has made rapid improvement since then, and it should be hard to keep this resolute galloper out of the frame.

The fillies' handicap at Newbury is best left to Summer's Lease (4.25), who won nicely on her debut. Connections of this Michael Bell-trained runner reckon she has got in lightly off a mark of 80 and I tend to agree. She should appreciate this 10-furlongs trip and easy ground.

Barry Geraghty rode his first winner for Nicky Henderson since his appointment as stable jockey when riding a strong finish on Ingratitude at Towcester yesterday. He may not have to be quite as energetic to get the well fancied Wallace Monument (5.15) home in the bumper at Southwell.
