Today's best bets, by Greg Wood
Sunday remains the dog day of the racing week in terms of the quality of racing available versus the number of people able to actually go and see it, but at least the forecast is good for Sussex and the crowd at Goodwood this afternoon will be able to admire the view in addition to a card that has a Grade 3, three Grade 4s and as many Grade 5s.
Given that Southwell managed to stage a Grade 2 on the Fibresand on Tuesday, this is a pretty thin offering for one of the sport's major venues. The novelty value of seeing a field of jump jockeys trying to come to terms with one of the Flat's trickier challenges in the opening race is not really enough to tip the balance.
Where's Susie (2.00) is the pick in that event, which includes two sub-50 rated performers, mainly because she is largely consistent, stays two miles and acts with some cut. Satwa Laird (nap 4.55) has more class about him, having finished second in a good time in one of the main events at Glorious Goodwood. He has not reached the same level in two starts since, but has the perfect inside draw today and can make the most of it.
Iron Condor (next best 5.30) was pulling too hard earlier in the season, but has started to settle down in recent outings and produced a career-best at Kempton last time, while Yurituni (4.10) is the best bet on the card at Bath.
