It rather sticks in the craw to be tipping a horse that has pulled up on its last two outings, but there's no accounting for the improvement that can be wrought from a runner back at its favourite track and for that reason, plus the fact that he will love the prevailing testing going, Tommy Carson (3.10pm) gets the best bet of the day tag on his return to his beloved Plumpton. The selection is handicapped to get back into the winner's enclosure and the 7lb claimer on board, who has won on him before, takes a tidy half stone off his back.
The other suggestion today is to wait for Kempton's evening all-weather meeting and get stuck into Brandywell Boy (8.50pm). He is in terrific form and should give a good account - he just got caught near the line last time and this looks an ideal race for him to gain compensation.
