Perhaps it is the influence of Paddy Brennan as new stable jockey, but the Nigel Twiston-Davies horses are holding their form better this season than has often been the case. Their only runner of the day is Commemoration Day (3.15) and this seven-year-old is worth checking out at Ludlow on his first run for the yard. Twiston-Davies has won this race twice and saddled a placed runner from just four runners in the last 10 years. Successful on the Flat and over hurdles, Commemoration Day had one run over fences when he was trained in Germany, finishing fourth. It is interesting his new trainer sends him straight into a handicap chase, suggesting home schooling has gone well.
A slog in the mud is just what Posh Stick (4.00) needs and she will get it at Carlisle, where she has won three times with the ground in her favour. The presence of Graham Lee in the saddle is a bonus, as he was on board for the mare's last (very easy) Carlisle victory.
Five wins from eight starts is the record Halsion Chancer (3.35) has amassed on the Polytrack at Lingfield. He got the seventh furlong well enough last time and can follow up today in the capable hands of George Baker.
On the jockey front, it is interesting to hear that Richard Hughes will take the ride on Blue Bajan in the totesport Trophy at Newbury on Saturday. His quiet riding style will be perfect for this useful Flat horse, who has loads of ability but needs a bit of kid-glove treatment.
