Talking Horses

Midweek action on the run up to the Derby meeting is low-key, to say the least. With Nottingham washed out, the best bet from the surviving afternoon fixtures looks to be Granary (2.50) at Lingfield. This is a filly getting better with experience and Henry Candy's four-year-old probably has less to do in this company than when finishing a close fourth behind Sir Duke at Newmarket. She had previously been unfortunate to run into the improved Ben Chorley in a Pontefract handicap.

The Digibet Achilles Stakes, a Listed race over five furlongs, has attracted some useful sprinters at Kempton tonight. Matsunosuke (7.40), who goes particularly well for Kerrin McEvoy, is the one to be on here. The six-year-old has had excuses since finishing fourth behind Captain Gerrard in the Palace House Stakes at Newmarket. He has notched two wins and a second from three all-weather runs and has a good draw tonight.

Mooted (8.40) could be on a favourable mark in the mile handicap at Kempton. He overcame difficulties in running to get off the mark at Windsor, and it could not have helped his cause that he got loose before the race. Roger Charlton's three-year-old is entitled to improve after just two outings.
