Alto Vertigo (3.30pm) won with a fair bit in hand at Wolverhampton last time and is worth backing to defy a 10lb rise in the official ratings when he reappears at Southwell today. Unfortunately, the forecast starting price of 11-4 in the Racing Post this morning is unlikely to be available and I expect him to start favourite.
Over the jumps Mendo (1.10pm), who makes his chasing debut at Fontwell, is the best bet today. He has the look of a horse who is going to come into his own over fences and travelled noticeably well when winning a competitive hurdle race at Cheltenham last time, suggesting that he is more ability than he has shown so far.
