The weather forecasters were right and Newmarket was drenched yesterday. Nearly half the people they expected didn't turn up with the crowd down a whopping 45% on last year. Conditions should be much more amenable today but the rainfall will ensure soft-ground horses are the ones to look out for.
It's quite tempting to pull up stumps on the betting front when the going deteriorates so badly as some horse, even those you expect to, simply don't act on desperate ground. One who should is Anna Pavlova 3.10pm put up her best performance ever when winning the Lancashire Oaks last Saturday. She will be even better suited by the soft surface today and is a dour battler, unlike main danger Papal Bull who is a bottler.
At bigger odds Choose your Moment 4.20pm also makes appeal at Newmarket. He hasn't been seen since running an excellent second to the very well handicapped Redford at Doncaster last month and is another who will be well suited by cut in the ground.
