Talgarth firefighters tackle Llangorse grass fire

Crews from Talgarth Fire Station endured "another busy day" on Monday after tackling a large grass fire in the Llangorse area in the Brecon Beacons. Colleagues from Brecon and Builth stations joined them as they sought to put out the flames as quickly as possible to stop the fire spreading further.

The Brecon Beacons is a hazardous region in the spring and summer for grass fires, and a particularly bad year was three years ago, back in 2019. In that year a climate change expert described parts of the area as looking like the African savannah after Mid and West Wales Fire Service reported a big spike in grass fires.

Professor Stefan Doerr of Swansea University warned that changing weather patterns were helping to fuel “tinder box” conditions in mid-Wales. And those warnings still hold true as we enter the spring of 2022.
