Tales of demonic worship, ghosts and UFOs at beauty spot loved by tourists

A popular beauty spot and walking area in Wirral also has a eerie side.

Bidston Hill is 100 acres of heathland and woodland and is one one of the highest points on the peninsula.

The land was part of Sir Robert Vyner's estate and purchased by Birkenhead Corporation in 1894 for use by the public.

However it also holds a darker side from ghosts, UFOs to demonic cults.

Tom Slemen, Liverpool expert on all things paranormal, wrote a guide of haunted places for the Liverpool ECHO in 2013 and it is "one of the most mysterious supernatural landmarks in the country, rises to over 234 feet and has a long, dark reputation as being a meeting place for various covens and occultists."

It is said that several ghosts haunt this hill and its famous windmill which was built in 1800.

According to some, a "vaporous outline of a man", believed to be a miller, was murdered in the early 19th century and has been seen in the vicinity of Bidston Hill windmill many times over the years.

According to Tom, "a Satanist and murderer" is said to be buried close to the windmill.

He said: "Legend has it that his ghastly-looking zombie-like form has been seen to slowly emerge from its grave on some moonlit nights."

However, it is not just urban myths that haunt this hill, but murder too.

Bidston was also at the centre of the gruesome Williams murders in the 19th century, which saw a mother and her four children discovered buried within the cellar of a building near Bidston Hall.

Police quickly turned their attentions to the missing father, who was later compared to Jack the Ripper.

Bidston Hill also goes beyond tales of the supernatural and into outer space, with claims of UFOs being sighted.

Tom said: "Bidston Hill is also classed by many investigators of UFOs as a “window area” – a hot-spot of UFO activity where strange craft and lights in the sky regularly appear.

"As recent as July 2012, a 25-year-old engineer named Mike Dunne photographed a dark disc-shaped UFO that appeared over Bidston Hill and hovered over nearby houses before vanishing. Dozens of other people saw this UFO."

There is also a secret network of wartime tunnels and medieval carvings to the sun goddess.
