Talented teen wins three medals at performing arts World Championships in LA

A gifted Glenmavis teenager has returned from a performance arts competition in Los Angeles with a clutch of medals.

Robyn Ward, 14, brought back gold, silver and bronze awards from her US journey to compete in the prestigious world championships of performing arts.

The Airdrie Academy pupil was the first Scot to represent Great Britain at the competition and performed in the pop and country music sections as well as the modelling event.

And Robyn struck gold in self-accompanied pop for her rendition of Lewis Capaldi’s song Hollywood, and took silver for performing Dolly Parton’s Jolene in the self-accompanied country discipline.

And despite never having modelled before, she impressed judges to take home bronze in the swimwear section and reach the semi-final in casualwear.

Watching on during Robyn’s stateside performances were proud parents Wendy and Eddie.

Wendy told the Advertiser: “Robyn did amazingly. She was in the 13-to-15-year-old category which had loads of contestants.

“To win three medals is a great achievement and I’m so chuffed for her.

“I think she was a bit nervous beforehand but she seemed very natural on the stage. She feels right at home with a guitar.

“It was really interesting to see people from different countries and cultures performing. Robyn couldn’t have done any more and she loved the buzz about the place.

“Thank you to all the sponsors who made it possible for Robyn to live her American dream.”

On the modelling aspect, Wendy added: “That was a very late addition to her schedule.

“She’s never done any kind of modelling before but someone at the championships said she has a suitable build for it and asked if she wanted to be a late entry for it.

“She thought ‘why not?’ and gave it a go and ended up with a medal and semi-final place!”

Reflecting on her time in LA, Robyn said: “I can’t thank everyone who helped me go over to LA enough.

“It allowed me to compete against some of the best up-and-coming talent in the world.

“This makes the medals I won so special to me and has given me something to aspire to now.”
