Talented Dumbarton Academy pupils named Young Sports Stars of the Month

Three talented Dumbarton Academy pupils have been named Active School’s Young Sport Stars of the Month for December.

Lucy Cross and Millie Graham were recognised for their achievements in beach volleyball, while all-round sportsman Lewis Boal was chosen after excelling in swimming.

Lucy and Millie are in S6 and made it to the quarter-finals of the Scottish Beach Volleyball Championships. They entered the tournament themselves and it was the first time they had ever played competitively outside of school.

As a result of their performances they were approached by the Scotland under-19s coach who invited them to play at Ravenscraig with the Scottish team.

They are part of the school sports council, volunteer during S1-S3 PE classes and run the school lunchtime volleyball club.

Talented swimmer Lewis recently finished in first place in the 1k distance race at the Open Water West District Championship held at Loch Venachar.

Since this achievement he has been accepted to join the Triathlon Scotland Academy.

An Active Schools spokesperson said: “Lewis enjoys participating in all sport and is a credit to Dumbarton Academy.

“A big congratulations to Lucy, Millie and Lewis from Active Schools and all at West Dunbartonshire Leisure.

“The Active Schools team are always looking for new volunteers to help get children in West Dunbartonshire more active, more often.”
