Takumi Minamino joins Southampton on loan from Liverpool

Southampton have completed the signing of Takumi Minamino on loan until the end of the season.

The Saints made their move late in the day on Monday and had to submit a deal sheet to the Premier League to allow them more time to complete the process.

The Japan international joined the Reds 13 months ago but has struggled to break into the side on a regular basis since his £7million move from Red Bull Salzburg.

Minamino netted his first Premier League goal for the champions to open the scoring in the 7-0 win over Crystal Palace on December 19.

However, the 26-year-old has played just six minutes of Premier League action since as Jurgen Klopp's side took a dip in form until their back-to-back wins over Tottenham and West Ham last week.

Klopp favoured Divock Origi and Xherdan Shaqiri ahead of Minamino for Sunday's 3-1 triumph at West Ham after Roberto Firmino was dropped to the bench and Sadio Mane suffered an injury.

Minamino will now spend the remainder of the campaign at St Mary's to round off a busy day of activity at Anfield.

The Reds completed the signings of two centre-backs in Ben Davies and Ozan Kabak to bolster their defensive ranks significantly.

As Davies joined from Preston North End, Sepp van den Berg completed a loan switch in the opposite direction until the end of the campaign.

Liverpool also completed the signing of 19-year-old goalkeeper Liam Hughes from Celtic on transfer deadline day.
