Takehiro Tomiyasu to get perfect shirt number at Arsenal after completing £19m transfer

Arsenal continue to be linked with first-team squad reinforcements as just over a few hours remain until the summer transfer window closes.

So far, the Gunners have signed Nuno Tavares, Albert Sambi Lokonga, Ben White, Martin Odegaard and Aaron Ramsdale.

The next and perhaps final deal of the summer to be announced will be Takehiro Tomiyasu's £19.75m transfer from Serie A side Bologna as the right-back is expected to undergo his medical in Italy.

Arsenal have until 11pm tonight to get this deal over the line, but all signs are pointing towards the 22-year-old being available for selection against Norwich City after the international break,

Once Tomiyasu joins the Gunners, supporters will be looking forward to seeing the defender holding the Arsenal shirt at his unveiling - but what squad number could he take at the Emirates Stadium?

Well, it would appear that Tomiyasu has one favoured option.

Despite being a defender he was worn no.14 for Bologna for the past three seasons and wore no.14 for Japan at this summer's Olympic Games in Tokyo.

At Arsenal, the incumbent No.14 is none other than captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang who is staying at the club amid talk of a surprise deadline day exit with Barcelona reportedly interested.

This means Tomiyasu will miss out on receiving his seemingly preferred shirt number when he joins Arsenal.

Alternatively, Tomiyasu could take the No.2 shirt, which is widely regarded as the perfect squad number for a right-back.

That shirt number is expected to become vacant at some point today as football.london understands Hector Bellerin will join La Liga outfit Real Betis on loan for the 2021/22 season.

Other vacant shirt numbers at the Emirates currently are no.11, no.12 and no.18, so there are plenty of options available to Tomiyasu if he prefers to have two digits on his back.
