Takeda Pharmaceutical said Tuesday it will close its Deerfield headquarters, where about 1,000 people work, by the end of year and that layoffs will begin August 30.
The three-building complex at Interstate 294 and Lake Cook Road has been the U.S. headquarters for Japan-based Takeda since 2006. As part of its $62 billion purchase of Shire, which closed in January, Takeda had said it planned to consolidate U.S. operations near Boston.
Some employees will be transferred or offered the option of working remotely, said Takeda spokeswoman Julia Ellwanger. “Integration activities with respect to certain groups that currently reside in Deerfield are ongoing, and we are encouraged by the progress we have made thus far,” she wrote in an email.
“Managers and their teams are working to consider employee needs and the needs of the business.”
Ellwanger said the company’s Bannockburn site will serve as a transition center. She said the company intends to sell the Deerfield property, encompassing 628,000 square feet, by March 31 of next year.
Laid-off workers will get severance and “transition support,” Ellwanger said.
