Takeaways and chip shops can stay open past 10pm curfew under new lockdown rules

Chip shops and late-night takeaways are allowed to serve customers after the new 10pm curfew in Scotland under new lockdown rules.

The Scottish Government has ordered pubs, restaurants and bars to close their doors early every night under the latest restrictions in a bid to curb the spread of coronavirus.

But takeaway joints will be allowed to serve food inside venues past the 10pm cut-off - as long as diners wear a mask and don't sit in.

It comes as Nicola Sturgeon announced new restrictions in response to a spike in infections, which saw a record 486 new cases of the deadly virus over a 24-hour period.

Under new rules for the hospitality industry, drive-thrus and delivery services can still operate.

Restaurants and cafes can also offer a takeaway or delivery service of food – but the off-sale of alcohol is strictly banned between the hours of 10pm and 10am.

The news will be a welcome relief for businesses like pizza joints and kebab houses which will likely be worried about a lack of custom due to the curfew.

Pubs and bars will be forced to close at 10pm sharp in Scotland – meaning last orders will likely be around 9.30pm.

Propping up the bar to order a drink will also be banned as venues are restricted to table service only.

Diners should also remain seated when eating out – except to use the loo – with no standing, queuing or dancing allowed.

Scots must continue to wear face masks while walking around a pub or restaurant, though it can be taken off when sitting down and eating.

Singing and shouting will also be off the cards and music turned off in order to stop the spread of Covid-19.

Bar hopping should also be kept to a minimum, with the Scottish Government urging people to limit the number of pubs and restaurants customers visit in one day.

Diners can still meet six people from two households - but must stay at least one metre apart from everyone else, including staff.

Heading to a house gathering after the pub is now illegal, with partygoers subject to hefty fines if they are caught.
