A Wirral takeaway has been given a zero star food hygiene rating, with inspectors finding urgent improvement was needed in food safety, hygienic food handling and the cleanliness and condition of the premises.
Sun Wah, on Woodchurch Road in Prenton, was given the worst possible rating after an inspection by Wirral Council. As well as getting the zero star score overall, the takeaway was given the worst possible rating in the three areas the inspection is broken down into.
Although the full report is not yet available, information published along with the rating shows the worst rating of zero stars, or ‘urgent improvement necessary’, was given in the area of hygienic food handling. This features the hygienic handling of food including preparation, cooking, cooling, reheating and storage.

This rating was also scored in the area of cleanliness and condition of facilities and building. This area includes an inspection of the takeaway’s layout, hand washing facilities, ventilation and pest control. In the area of ‘management of food safety’, which includes having systems or checks in place to make sure food is safe to eat, staff know about food safety and the food safety officer has confidence standards will be maintained in the future, the worst possible rating was also scored.
Tam Han, manager of Sun Wah, said the premises was in a poor state when she took it over a few months ago and that she had put in a lot of money to improve it. Ms Han added the takeaway has been reinspected recently and it would get a much better score.
She added issues at the premises included a problem with the extractor fan, a failure to print out documents and the fact some of the chopping boards were worn. Ms Han said among improvements made since the zero star rating was given, she had retrained staff, bought a new hand wash basin, new chopping boards and got a quote for a new extractor fan.
