Takeaway demands masks removed before coming in because 'they're for hooligans'

A takeaway restaurant has caused a stir amongst locals after placing a sign up banning people from wearing masks inside.

The sign at Mamma Mia in Scarborough, West Yorkshire, which sells pizzas as well as burgers and fries, reads: "No masks allowed.

"Masks are for: Hooligans, Vigilantes, Superheroes, Criminals and Asbestos workers.

    "Remove mask before entering."

Aaron Vacey posted a picture up of the sign - which staff at Mamma Mia's said has since been removed - on Sunday to a community Facebook and there was a mixed response from readers, Yorkshire Live reports.

Some were shocked at the sign, with one writing: "Serves them right if they get infected then" and another putting: "This can’t be real. Are they above the government?"

Others were supportive of the takeaway, with a couple of people saying "Good on them" and "Well done".

One person wrote: "Up to them what they do if people don't like it, don't go in. Simple."

Away from the debate, one person joked: "But wait! I'm an asbestos fighting, vigilante superhero!

"Where am I supposed to get my below average pizza from now?"

It comes after masks were made mandatory in shops, supermarkets and a number of other public places by the government on Friday.

However, restaurants and bars were exempt from the guidelines.

Mamma Mia's declined to comment but said the sign had been taken down.
