Take the High Road actress Gwyneth Guthrie dies as fans pay tribute to Mrs Mack

The actress who starred at Mrs Mack in the iconic, long-running Scottish soap Take the High Road has sadly died at the age of 84.

Gwyneth Guthrie played the busybody character in the long-running programme for 20 years and was much loved by fans of the show.

Gwyneth's family today released a statement letting fans know that she passed away peacefully and surrounded by loved ones.

The show was touched with a reprieve in popularity after it was brought back to the public when episodes were uploaded to STV player during the coronavirus lockdown.

Originally from Ayr, Guthrie married John Borland and they had three children together.

Back in June last year, the actress admitted to the Daily Record that she had never watched herself on screen, while saying it was "an honour" that the show was back on TV for people to watch.

She said: “I’ve never watched myself because I know myself and I just thought that’s not for me,” she explained. “It’s an honour that it’s back on. It’s lovely that people enjoy it so much. I’m so pleased, it means it’s got a longer life than I realised and does our country no harm.”

Gwyneth brought years of joy to viewers with her choice of hats for the show, which was filmed just outside of Glasgow in Luss on the banks of Loch Lomond.

A statement from her family read: “It is with a heavy heart we announce the passing of our amazing mum, Gwyneth Guthrie. She passed peacefully on Tuesday, November 9, at home and surrounded by her loving family. She will be playing to her next audience in heaven."
