Take Edinburgh's quiz to see if you can guess the top crimes of 1897

A quirky quiz has been created that will test your knowledge of historic Edinburgh crime.

The Edinburgh tram project created the quiz based on the ‘Booklet of Crimes and Offences’ from the Burgh of Leith, which was found in a time capsule in December 2019.

Edinburgh tram workers unearthed the 19th century time capsule underneath the Robert Burns Statue on Bernard Street in Leith.

It is believed to have been placed there when the statue was erected in 1898, though upon opening the capsule on January 24 2020, conservators learned that it had been subsequently opened and resealed in 1961.

One of the books found within the capsule was the ‘Booklet of Crimes and Offences’ which is dated back to 1897 and gives a unique insight into the bizarre justice system at the time.

Trams to Newhaven recently gifted a copy of the artifact to Police Scotland and to celebrate they have created a fun quiz to test your knowledge.

Take part in the quiz here:

Councillor Karen Doran, Transport and Environment Vice Convener said: “This was a fascinating discovery when we opened the Robert Burns statue time capsule and it sheds some light on all aspects of life in Leith more than 100 years ago.

“I’m sure local police officers will find it just as interesting, as will future generations, once we return it to the time capsule with the reinstatement of the statue as part of Trams to Newhaven.”
