'Take a loss with pride' - Former Liverpool striker Daniel Sturridge slams racist abuse and fighting after England defeat

Former Liverpool player Daniel Sturridge called out England fans' for racist abuse after the Three Lions lost to Italy in the Euro 2020 final.

The striker took to Twitter after racist abuse from fans was directed at Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford and Bukayo Saka.

All three players missed their spot-kicks in the 3-2 shootout loss and were targeted on social media after the game.

Sturridge urged fans to take the loss with pride, stating they shouldn't take the result out on others.

"Respectfully. Stay off the booze or don’t go if you can’t help but fight at football matches and attack innocent people," he tweeted.

"Don’t tweet if you’re gonna racially abuse people.

"[Football] is life I get it, but take a loss with pride. You don’t need to take it out on someone else."

Sturridge's post follows an official statement from the FA condemning the discriminatory abuse in the early hours of Monday morning.

The official England Twitter page shared the statement and said, “We’re disgusted that some of our squad – who have given everything for the shirt this summer – have been subjected to discriminatory abuse online after tonight’s game.

“We stand with our players.”

Meanwhile, a Facebook Company Spokesperson commented: “No one should have to experience racist abuse anywhere, and we don’t want it on Instagram.

"We quickly removed comments and accounts directing abuse at England’s footballers last night and we’ll continue to take action against those that break our rules.

"In addition to our work to remove this content, we encourage all players to turn on Hidden Words, a tool which means no one has to see abuse in their comments or DMs. No one thing will fix this challenge overnight, but we’re committed to keeping our community safe from abuse.”
