Take a look inside Summit Up climbing centre coming to Greater Manchester

A new climbing centre is opening in Greater Manchester.

Summit Up features a wide variety of climbing walls, angles and holds, with 100 climbing routes spread across 47 rope lines, two official speed walls with timers and a unique two-tier floating boulder, all of which are of equal standard to those used in the Tokyo Olympics.

The new 20,000 sq ft centre, which opens in Oldham later this month, is also home to one of the largest and highest Clip ‘n Climb arenas in the UK, with 25 different fun challenges for ages 4+, plus toddler sessions for kids aged 2-4 and children’s parties.

Key challenges at Clip ‘n Climb include the popular Stairway to Heaven, the adrenaline pumping Leap of Faith, and an impressive 10-metre Vertical Drop Slide.

There will also be two Valo Climb walls that use the world’s first interactive gaming technology – combining climbing with interactive gaming.

Summit Up is a community-focused project initiated by The Stoller Charitable Trust, a charity whose purpose has been to provide opportunities to raise aspirations, support Oldham’s young people to reach the height of their ability and to provide a helping hand when it is most needed.

The purpose-built centre aims to provide a fun and safe space for the whole family to 'experience something new and push their limits in an exciting new leisure facility'. All distributable profits will go directly back into supporting charity.

Professional rock climber Shauna Coxsey was at the launch of the centre on Wednesday, ahead of its grand opening on Saturday, September 18.

Fresh from representing Team GB at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, she said: "It is fantastic to see more people discovering climbing after the Olympic Games and a venue like Summit Up is a fantastic place to get into this amazing sport.

"With all three disciplines of climbing on offer as well as the Clip 'n Climb challenges, Oldham is very lucky to have a venue like this on its doorstep."

For those not wanting to join the action, or for climbers needing a break, the Egerton Street centre is also home to an alpine themed café called South Ridge Café, overlooking the Clip ‘n Climb arena, offering a selection of food and drinks.

Summit Up will be open 10am to 7pm Monday to Friday and 9.30am to 5.30pm at weekends.

Tickets, costing £12.95, can be booked online, with the Drop Slide, Leap of Faith and ValoClimb, an extra £2 each.
