Take a look back at when the Tall Ships visited Belfast in 1991

The Tall Ships visited Belfast in 1991 attracting crowds of thousands as Belfast dock was transformed by the majestic ships.

The four-day visit was a major event for the city and on average had 100,000 people visiting every day.

Sailors from Russia, America, Poland, Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Australia docked in Belfast with around 40,000 visiting during the first 12 hours.

On Day of the Seafarer, June 25, we are looking back at the Tall Ships’ visit to Belfast in 1991.

In this UTV clip from Northern Ireland Screen’s Digital Film Archive, Sir Harry Secombe explores the docks of Belfast during the event, interviewing organisers, participants and members of the local community.

Here he speaks to Robin Dixon, Chairman of Northern Ireland’s Tall Ships Council. He explains that it is really a festival of youth afloat which benefits young people as they learn to develop new skills, think on their feet and work as a team.
