Bodum Parma, £8, available from John Lewis *****
The advantage of this one is that, once you've grated the cheese, you can place the nice-looking dish on the table. The dish has a rubber non-slip bottom and comes with a lid for storage.
OXO Good Grips i-Series Container Grater, £14.49, widely available *****
This grater is double-edged, so you can grate in both directions to speed up the process, and the rubber grips on the side make grating even faster. The container has measurements on it and is open at the top so the Parmesan can be poured onto your pasta.
Cheese Bug, £8.95, from Cucina, www.cucinadirect.co.uk ****
This is similar to the Bodum grater but doesn't hold as much and is awkward to store. Nicely angled for easy grating, though.
Paxton & Whitfield olive-wood grater, £14.95, mail order 01608 652090, www.paxtonandwhitfield.co.uk *****
The prettiest of the bunch. Cheese is caught in a little wooden box. Looks and feels great .
Alessi Todo cheese grater, stockists 020 7518 9091, £35 **
This is a good foot-and-a-half long, and is the perfect accompaniment to one of those enormous pizzeria pepper mills. Just one grate will give you enough Parmesan for each plate, but it's quite impractical to use.
