Taiwo Awoniyi speaks out as Liverpool confirm Union Berlin transfer deal

Liverpool have confirmed Taiwo Awoniyi has left the club to join Union Berlin.

The striker spent last season on loan in the German capital and helped the side to a seventh-placed finish in the Bundesliga.

The ECHO understands Awoniyi leaves after the two clubs agreed a fee of £6.5m on Tuesday.

The Nigerian 23-year-old, who joined up with the Reds squad for the club’s pre-season training camp in Austria last week, departs after six years at Anfield.

Moving to Liverpool in 2015, Awoniyi was sent out on loan seven times in six years, turning out for Mouscron and Klopp’s former club Mainz, among others.

Last season, he scored five goals in 22 Bundesliga appearances and now moves to Union Berlin permanently.

Speaking to the club’s official website, Awoniyi said: “After lots of loan moves in previous years, I want to finally come and have a home.

"I owe so much to Union, so it makes me happy and proud to be back here.

“It’s fantastic to continue on the great path with the club. I will give everything to quickly pick up where I was before my injury.”

The forward became the second player to leave Liverpool today, after the Reds confirmed midfielder Marko Grujic had joined Porto.

As the Echo reported, the two clubs agreed a £10.5m deal for the Serbian midfielder who spent last season on loan at the Portuguese giants.

It is also understood the Reds have included a 10% sell-on clause in both deals.
