Taiwo Awoniyi reacts to scoring his first goal since permanent Liverpool exit

A former Liverpool striker has started life away from Anfield with an impressive performance.

Taiwo Awoniyi left the Reds earlier this summer to sign a permanent deal with Bundesliga outfit Union Berlin.

Awoniyi joined Liverpool in 2015, but was unable to play for the club due to not having a work permit.

He was granted a work permit this summer, and that led to several clubs in England being interested in his services.

Awoniyi linked up with the Liverpool squad for pre-season training in Austria, before being allowed to leave the camp to secure a move away from the club.

The 24-year-old was sold to Union Berlin for £6.5m, the same club he spent last season on loan.

He made his return to the club in their opening Bundesliga match of the season against Bayer Leverkusen on Saturday.

Awoniyi scored the opening goal of the game as Union Berlin were held to a 1-1 draw, with Moussa Diaby netting the other goal in the contest.

After the game, Awoniyi spoke about how he’s “waiting for many years” for the chance to perform at a permanent home.

Awoniyi told Bundesliga.com : “For me, I think (this moment) is what I’ve waited for, for many years.

“I’m really happy I can achieve it this year and I’m back again in Berlin.”
