Taiwan becomes Asia's first country to legalise same-sex marriage

Taiwan has become the first country in Asia to legalise same-sex marriage following a vote today.

The Taiwanese government passed the law on today after they were given a two-year deadline following the court ruling in 2017 that was in favour of same-sex marriage.

The lawmakers discussed three different bills to legalise same-sex unions, and the most progressive out of the three was passed.

Hundreds of supporters of the ruling took to the streets to celebrate the announcement outside the parliamentary building in the capital of Taipei.

Taiwan’s president, Tsai Ing-wen, tweeted after the vote: "We took a big step towards true equality, and made Taiwan a better country."

What does the ruling entail?

The bill refers to same-sex partnerships as "marriages", as opposed to the other two bills submitted by conservative law makers which described it as "same-sex family relationships" and "same-sex unions".

The bill, which also offers limited adoption rights, was passed by 66 to 27 votes, predominantly supported by the Democratic Progressive Party.

The vote will take effect after President Tsai Ing-wen passes it into law.

The move is trending on Twitter with some users saying they are "proud" of their country, along with photographs and videos of cheer from the moment the law was announced:
