Taika Waititi to direct and co-write new Star Wars film

Taika Waititi has been enlisted to direct and co-write a new Star Wars film.

The filmmaker, known for his work on Thor: Ragnarok and Jojo Rabbit, will team up with 1917’s Krysty Wilson-Cairns to co-write the screenplay.

The development was fittingly announced on Twitter on Star Wars Day, with the official Star Wars account breaking the “incoming news from a galaxy far, far away”.

Waititi is no stranger to the Star Wars universe, having directed the series finale of The Mandalorian for Disney+.

It’s also been confirmed that Russian Doll’s Leslye Headland is developing a new untitled Star Wars series for Disney+.

Further information has yet to be revealed, with fans waiting with bated breath for more movies following the conclusion of the Skywalker saga with 2019's The Rise of Skywalker.

Waititi has established himself as one of the most in-demand directors in Hollywood in recent times, with plans also in place to return to the MCU to direct Thor 4.
