Taika Waititi addresses rumours he's directing Star Wars film: 'I would love to'

Taika Waititi has responded to rumours that he’s working on a Star Wars film – saying he would “love” to get involved with the franchise, in the right conditions.

The director spoke with Variety the day after winning the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay for his movie Jojo Rabbit.

Waititi, who voices a character in the Disney+ Star Wars TV show The Mandalorian and has directed one episode of the series, was asked about the movie rumours and said: “I wish there was a better story, I’ll put it that way.

“Are there discussions about the Star Wars film? Like, yeah, I discussed with my friends in 1996 how cool Star Wars was. That’s what they’re going off.”

When pressed on the rumours, he specified that he would be interested in a possible project.

“I think people see me hanging out with people, especially with Star Wars, and think I’m having some big discussions about it. I would f****** love to,” he said.

Waititi added that he would consider a Star Wars movie “if it was right” and continued: ”I would want to do any kind of movie if it made sense, and if it felt not like career suicide.”

The director has worked with Marvel (now a Disney property, like Star Wars), directing Thor: Ragnarok and the upcoming Thor: Love and Thunder.

Jojo Rabbit was also up for Best Picture at the Oscars on Sunday. The trophy eventually went to Bong Joon-ho’s Parasite.
