Tahith Chong apologises to Man Utd teammates after Europa League horror miss

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has revealed that Tahith Chong apologised to his Manchester United teammates after his horror open goal miss.

Winger Chong was gifted a tap-in by Luke Shaw to put United into a 2-0 lead during the second half of their Europa League clash with Astana.

But instead of burying his first senior goal for the Red Devils, Chong made poor connection with the ball to lift over the vacant goal.

Less than a minute later, Astana were level through Dmitriy Shomko before Di'Shon Bernard put through his own goal to condemn United to their first European defeat of the season.

For that reason, Chong said sorry to his fellow youngsters, as Solskjaer explained.

"Yeah, of course he knows he messed up, but he said the same in the dressing room," the Norwegian said.

"It's a difficult game, but no forward or striker should worry about missing chances. That's about growing up, I think I did that as well when I was young."

Robbie Savage was not as kind towards Chong during his live commentary on BT Sport.

Savage said: "Gomes and Shaw do every so well. Shaw with the one-two, good cut back and then Chong, open net, I don’t know how he’s missed that!

"It was a great opportunity for him to get on the scoresheet for Manchester United. Lazy!

"Football is all about those fine margins. Chong should have put United 2-0 up and 38 seconds later [Dmitri] Shomko hits a strike into that far corner past [Lee] Grant."

After the match Owen Hargreaves added: "Lovely one-two from Gomes and Shaw. Chong has just got to score.

"Chong knows better than anyone there. He’s leaning back. If he gets his body over the ball it’s a tap in."
