We notice, somewhat late in the day, that the Observer Magazine has featured as its hip new word of the week 'Folksonomy'. Bless 'em. They've been looking at the blog.
There was, we confess, some debate in the inner cabal of Observer blogsville as to whether the Folksonomic Zeitgeist (the clever gimmick that gives proportionate display automatically to those subjects which are getting most attention on the blog, eyes right) should keep its name. The main argument against is that hardly anyone has any idea what 'folksonomic' means. The main argument for is that it is a kick-ass name and the sooner it enters the language, the sooner you can use it in Scrabble, covering yourself in points and glory.
But now the neologism has even had the old media, old Observer seal of approval. The definition is there for all to see. Respectability is sure to follow. Perhaps that makes it a bit passé, a bit 2004. They're not that cool on the magazine desk.
