Taco pop-up takeover at east end bar The Gate

Scotland’s newest street food collective is taking over a bar in the east end... And they'll be serving up tacos.

MASA are moving into the kitchen at The Gate through Thursday, Friday and Saturday this week – with sweet and savoury pairings and a frozen margarita menu to boot.

Straight from launching at Park Lane Market in Glasgow’s southside- where they sold over 200 tacos in three hours, MASA is the brainchild of experienced chef, Derek Park. Having worked his way up Glasgow’s leading restaurants including Crabshakk, Ox and Finch and most recently alongside Julie Lin MacLeod at Julie’s Kopitiam, Derek’s cooking style is centred around fresh flavours influenced by season.

Taking place between 12 pm until 10pm each day, the Taco Takeover is The Gate’s second guest kitchen residency, following on from a sold-out El Cartel pop-up in September during Glasgow Cocktail Week in partnership with World Class.

MASA - named after the dough that makes their tacos, is known for serving up punchy flavours in fresh, hand-pressed, authentic corn tortillas.

MASA chef, Derek Park said: "MASA is simply about tacos at their best; every flavour element has been well planned and prepared, served on the freshest possible tortillas. Our tacos are hand-pressed, vibrant and we can’t wait to takeover The Gate for our first East End pop-up!”

Alasdair Shaw, manager of The Gate said: “Our first takeover with El Cartel was a great success and totally sold out. We are very excited to have Del Park from MASA (or ‘Del Cartel’ as we like to call him) showing that Glasgow can also make some of the best tacos you will ever taste. Made in Glasgow and one of the most exciting pop-up in the city to launch this year, we can’t wait  to collaborate with MASA next weekend.”

Located directly across from The Barrowland Ballroom, The Gate is dedicated to showcasing the best of Scottish hospitality and toasties, run by drinks veteran, Andy Gemmell.

Tables are very limited, for reservations, please email contact@thegateglasgow.com to book your table. There will also be a limited number of walk-ins available during the three day pop-up.
