Taco Bell drive-thru timing tricks have become a recurring topic in Reddit discussions, with users describing alleged methods employees use to manipulate vehicle sensors and recorded wait times. Now, one customer says they may have spotted another version of the practice at their local Taco Bell.
Reddit user AdderallDude raised the question in an August 2026 post in the r/TacoBell subreddit titled, “What’s the trick my Taco Bell employees be pulling.” At a recent Taco Bell visit, he wrote, “I noticed when you order in the drive-thru, before you pull up to the window the worker has a trash bag filled with something they tap on the ground outside the window before you pull up.”
The unusual observation prompted commenters to discuss what they said could be happening beneath the surface of the drive-thru system. The post did not identify the restaurant’s location.
Commenters suggested it’s the drive-thru timing system.
One commenter, who identified themselves as a former Taco Bell employee, claimed restaurants use timers to measure how long cars spend in the drive-thru. The commenter alleged that employees can manipulate those timers by using a metal object to trigger the vehicle-detection system before a customer reaches the final window.
According to the commenter, the goal would be to start the timer earlier, rather than when the vehicle reaches the point where the restaurant’s performance is being measured. The commenter said employees could then stop the timing before the customer leaves the drive-thru.

Another suggestion might not be a cheat at all. “It’s most likely to get rid of a car that the drive-through system believes is there. My location used a spare tray.” Many noted similar stories from other fast food franchises.
That explanation has appeared in other Reddit discussions about Taco Bell. In a June 2024 r/TacoBell thread, a user described seeing a manager place what appeared to be a metal bowl on the ground near a drive-thru window.
Commenters suggested the object could trigger an underground vehicle sensor. Another Reddit user claiming to work at Taco Bell said employees sometimes use metal objects around the drive-thru sensor. A similar discussion appeared in r/LivingMas in 2021. Users described Taco Bell employees placing metal objects near the drive-thru lane and connected the practice to vehicle sensors and timing.
HME, a company that provides drive-thru technology, said in a 2012 press release that Taco Bell had selected HME as a preferred supplier for drive-thru headsets and timing systems. HME said its technology could track different stages of a drive-thru transaction and generate reports based on recorded times.
Taco Bell Reddit discussions are not all drive-thru-related. In another recent post, a Redditor alleged they entered their local Taco Bell shortly before closing time and were asked, “Do you like your food floor-seasoned?”
