Anyone noticed the spate of red-top advertising recently? We have the Daily Star informing us that it is not just read by boys, while the Mirror papers have been advertising Lego giveaways. Now here comes the Sun, with a series of poster and press adverts featuring its star columnists.
Outspoken Kelvin MacKenzie (whose column is never printed in the Scottish Sun so he can continue to take potshots at one of his favourite targets) is the star turn, dressed in a suit of armour and wielding a giant pen (mightier than a sword, etc). He is closely followed by Jane Moore, bestride a wrecking ball and accompanied by the slogan, "Opinions with balls". Political commentator Trevor Kavanagh towers over a House of Commons built from cards, TV critic Ally Ross is poised to blow up a pile of TV sets with dynamite, while Lorraine Kelly appears as a fairy godmother. The ads were created by the agency WCRS and will be shown throughout London and the south east, where the paper has a reduced price of 20p (compared with 25p and 30p in other parts of the country). Monkey is amused by the whole thing, but has just one question – where's Jeremy Clarkson?
