More than 460,000 people are set to flee their homes as the Philippines’s “explosive” Taal volcano continues to spew plumes of ash and lava.
The country’s Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said it supported a “total evacuation” of people within a 14km radius of the volcano, which began erupting on Sunday night.
So far, almost 20,000 residents of the surrounding Batangas and Cavite provinces have sought shelter in 118 temporary evacuation centres set up by authorities.
But with some 459,000 more living within the volcano’s 14km danger zone, according to the UN's Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), a mass exodus could soon be on the cards.
