'Ta Boris ya puddin'' Scots hit out over possible Greggs chicken bake shortage due to Brexit

Scots have hit out at reports of a potential shortage of chicken bakes in Greggs.

The firm is reportedly facing a shortage of chicken based products driven by a lack of lorry drivers due to Brexit.

As well as lorry drivers, other areas of supply chains have been hit by a lack of workers.

Politics Home reports disruption to chicken suppliers, which last week forced Nando's to temporarily close 50 stores, is also impacting Greggs, which has over 2,000 stores nationwide.

The Greggs menu has several items containing chicken, including the chicken bake, the chargrill chicken oval bite, and several chicken-filled baguettes.

The bakery confirmed a small number of products had been affected by ongoing supply chain disruption, but stressed that its broad menu meant it had been able to mitigate the impact.

It is the latest high profile casualty of the labour shortage which has lead to McDonald's running out of milkshakes.

Online Scots have commented on the Greggs news.

One wrote: "This is getting serious."

Another tweeted: "ta Boris ya big puddin'."

Andrew Cochrane wrote on Facebook cheekily: "And here's me thinking all these places lovingly craft the products using only the best locally sourced produce."

But Lesely Johnston took a different view.

She wrote: "It’s good for all good manufacturers in the UK as there’s not very little coming from Europe now.

I don’t see Lidl or Aldi complaining and all their stuff comes from Germany and surrounding countries."

Richard Griffiths, British Polutry Council chief executive, told Politics Home said that members had reported a 5-10% drop in weekly chicken production as a result of workforce issues.

He said: "They are currently producing a reduced range of products for UK customers, and are seriously concerned that the supply of staple chicken products will be impacted.

"When you don’t have people, you have a problem – and this is something we are seeing across the whole supply chain."
