T20 World Cup: Aaron Finch on why India should persist with Yashasvi Jaiswal-Rohit Sharma as openers

NEW DELHI: The 2024 T20 World Cup is off to a thrilling start with co-hosts USA and West Indies securing victories on the opening day. The excitement continued on the second day with Namibia clinching a dramatic Super Over win against Oman on Monday.

Indian fans had their first glimpse of the team during their sole warm-up match against Bangladesh on Saturday. India dominated the match, securing a comfortable 60-run victory.

Virat Kohli was absent, having arrived in New York just a day before after a long flight from India. Yashasvi Jaiswal's absence from the match has fueled speculation about whether he will be dropped from the playing eleven to make way for Kohli to open the innings with Rohit Sharma.

Former Australia captain Aaron Finch weighed in on India's batting lineup, expressing confidence in their potential if the tournament sees high-scoring matches.

"Say it is a 180-style tournament, then India have got a very good side for it. (Kohli) can bat long into the innings and still strike at 150," said Finch on The Grade Cricketer podcast.

"Jaiswal is a gun, he tees off with Rohit Sharma up top, they will go as hard as they can. Once Virat then gets in, the other one continues to go really hard because everyone knows that he is going to bat long," Finch added.

Finch also praised Jaiswal's potential impact if he gets to play in the tournament, highlighting the youngster's aggressive style at the top of the order.

As India prepare to face Ireland in their opening match on June 5 at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium, fans and experts are eager to see how the team will finalize their playing XI and strategize their approach, particularly with the speculation surrounding Kohli and Jaiswal's roles.
