Mobile phone network T-Mobile has confirmed around 40 million customers have had data stolen after a cyber hack.
A spokesperson for the company confirmed social security numbers are among information leaked.
The company confirmed that some customers had been victims of a data breach earlier this week when reports surfaced on information for sale on a hacking forum.

In a statement, the T-Mobile spokesperson, said: “Importantly, no phone numbers, account numbers, PINs, passwords, or financial information were compromised in any of these files of customers or prospective customers.”
Whilst T-Mobile maintains that the number of affected customers is just 40 million, the hackers have claimed that the number of people’s sensitive data that they now hold is closer to 100 million.
On Wednesday, T-Mobile said it had reset the PIN codes of all of the compromised prepaid accounts and recommended to its customers that they do the same.
Anyone with a T-Mobile account has been advised to change their passwords and reset their accounts in light of the breach.
A spokesperson for T-Mobile said: “We have no indication that the data contained in the stolen files included any customer financial information, credit card information, debit or other payment information.
