T.J. Hockenson in concussion protocol but not expected to be out long-term

T.J. Hockenson suffered a scary injury during Sunday’s loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. The rookie tight end attempted to hurdle a Chiefs defender but instead fell hard to the Ford Field turf, landing on his head and shoulder.

Hockenson laid motionless for several minutes before he was eventually carted off the field. There were fears of a possible serious neck or shoulder injury.

As of now, the only confirmed diagnosis is a concussion. Lions coach Matt Patricia revealed that in his Monday press conference.

“In protocol as far that’s concerned, but really just normal,” Patricia stated. “Today’s fine and everything like that, but he’ll be in that – nope just the protocol right now.”

Coach continued when asked about what he thought when he saw the injury initially,

“Obviously, just think about that player at that time and that moment. Just making sure they’re OK. I care a lot about these guys, we spend a lot of time together. The part of the game you hate to see is when guys get hurt or guys are down on the ground like that. For me, the relationship is first and foremost, and you forget about the game in those moments and you just worry about the individual. That’s my only focus, just making sure he’s OK and making sure that he’s getting everything that he needs to at that point, from attention – our medical staff does a great job. Those guys were on it right away, but he was good when he sat up, got him to smile and all that stuff, so I felt better, so it was good.”

The Lions players are off for the rest of the week for the bye, so don’t expect any updates from the team until the middle of next week.
