T in the Park's 25th anniversary: Relive first three amazing years at Strathclyde Park

For all the talk that Balado eventually became the spiritual home of T in the Park, Strathclyde Park was its first home.

It was 25 years ago this week - on July 30 and 31 - that we raised a glass to the birth of the Scottish festival scene.

And for three glorious years in the mid-1990s we were able to take a stroll down Strathy for the biggest party in the land.

Rage Against the Machine, Primal Scream, Blur, Radiohead and Pulp were among the headliners between 1994 and 1996.

Incendiary sets from The Prodigy during the second and third years remain a personal highlight, while every act from the glory days of Britpop also came to town.

For probably the last time in their career, Oasis were tucked away fifth on the bill in King Tut’s Wah Wah Tent at the first T in the Park.

Sandwiched between Whiteout and Mike Peters, their performance came a month before the debut album that would catapult them to superstardom.

Other acts that first year included Björk (below), Crowded House, Pulp and Del Amitri – split across the main stage and  King Tut’s.

Then at the second event in 1995, the Groove Tent brought in Massive Attack, The Shamen and Underworld while the NME Stage had Britpop staples Echobelly, Elastica, Supergrass, Ash, Sleeper and The Verve.

Among the main stage turns were Paul Weller, Black Grape, The Charlatans and Kylie Minogue.

And for the final year at Strathclyde Park we had Radiohead, Foo Fighters, Alanis Morissette, The Chemical Brothers, Beck and Dogstar – featuring Hollywood actor Keanu Reeves.

The festival moved to Balado from 1997 until 2014, and in 2015 it moved again, to Strathallan Park in Perthshire, ending in 2016.

In July 1996, Stuart Clumpas of DF Concerts said: “We are looking at alternative sites for two reasons. Firstly we have sold out for this year well in advance of the event, and would be looking for a larger site.

“Secondly, there is still uncertainty surrounding the availability of the Palace Grounds site for next year.”

Stressing that they would like to maintain links with South Lanarkshire, Stuart added: “We’ve had attractive offers from all over the place, but we would like to maintain the relationship with the people who helped us in the beginning.”
