GANG Of Youths drummer Dom Borzestowski says his brother Szymon's forthcoming second record, Blue Coloured Mountain, will provide an insight into where the late Newcastle songwriter's music was headed.
On Thursday the title track, also known as Yakuza, was released ahead of the seven-track EP on November 8.
It was accompanied by an animated video directed by Darcy Prendergast.
"I think he was progressing in his sound and his ability," Dom Borzestowski says. "I remember a couple of months before he passed away, he handed me a CD with Yakuza on it and was like, 'I want you to have this. I like this song. I think it's one of my best'."
The track Blue Coloured Mountain features a heavier electronic and groove-based sound, with Szymon's falsetto vocals.
"The way those songs were coming together, he was finding that sound more," Borzestowski says. "It was super exciting to see where that was heading."
Borzestowski says his family were hesitant initially to release the tracks, but given the outpouring of love for his ARIA-nominated debut album Tigersapp released in 2015, they felt compelled to share the songs unchanged with the world.
"It felt kind of weird in a way," he says. "Cos these are little gems we have as a family. It's a way for us to remember him, but I think they're almost too good to not share."
Szymon died aged 23 in 2012 after a battle with depression and mental illness.
