SZA wants to bring Storm’s origin story to the MCU and thinks it would be ‘so gnarly’

Grammy-winning artist SZA has expressed her desire to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe by playing the iconic character Storm. The singer and actress shared her interest during a recent interview on The Jennifer Hudson Show, where she discussed her future acting plans with the talk show host.

SZA is currently making waves in both music and acting. Her double album SOS Deluze: LANA was released on February 9, and she recently performed alongside Kendrick Lamar at this year’s Super Bowl. She also made her acting debut in the buddy comedy One of Them Days with Keke Palmer.

When asked about her acting ambitions, SZA specifically mentioned Storm’s origin story. “You know how Storm has an origin story? Like she comes from this whole other place where it’s like the jungle,” SZA said. “I think that would be so gnarly if I could be Storm in an origin story. I love to bring the range.”

Other actresses also want to play Storm

SZA is not the only actress interested in taking on the role of Ororo Monroe, joining a growing list of actresses who could potentially play Storm in the MCU. In January, Wicked actress Cynthia Erivo also expressed her desire to play Storm in the MCU. Erivo told the National Board of Review that she wants to explore the character’s depth and inner struggles, feeling that previous versions have not fully captured Storm’s potential.

“I really want to play Storm,” Erivo said. “I know it sounds frivolous, but I think we haven’t uncovered how grand she is and all of that inner turmoil that she has, so I think there’s a world where we could do something like that.” This shows that multiple talented actresses are eager to bring their own interpretation to the beloved Marvel character.

The character of Storm has been portrayed by Halle Berry and Alexandra Shipp in previous X-Men films. While both actresses delivered solid performances, many fans believe there is still more to explore with the character. Storm is known as one of the most powerful mutants in Marvel comics, with omega-level abilities that control weather and natural elements.

In the comics, Storm is much more than just a team member of the X-Men. She serves as a commanding political leader, a fierce warrior, and possesses some of the most formidable powers in the Marvel universe. Her character has deep connections to different cultures and locations around the world, particularly her origins in Africa, which could provide rich material for an origin story film.

Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige has already hinted that X-Men characters will start appearing in upcoming Marvel movies. In November, Feige said fans can expect to see X-Men players in the next few films before the team gets an official reboot. He mentioned that the Secret Wars storyline will lead into a new age of mutants and X-Men, calling it a “dream come true” to finally have the X-Men back under Marvel’s control.

According to reports, SZA shows natural talent in front of the camera in her debut film, One of Them Days. With her musical background and growing acting skills, she could bring a unique perspective to Storm’s character. Whether Marvel will consider her for the role remains to be seen, especially since Marvel recently revealed who’s been cast as the MCU’s Storm, but her enthusiasm for the character is clear.
