Systematic trials, equal opportunity behind fine show by Indian shooters: Gagan Narang

NEW DELHI: 2012 Olympic bronze medallist Gagan Narang attributed India's success in securing 15 quota places for the Paris Games to systematic trials, proper marking systems and equal opportunities provided to all contenders.

Narang, who clinched bronze in London is thrilled that 15 shooters from India will compete in the Paris Olympics.

Among them are two female shooters from his academy, Elavenil Valarivan and Ramita.

“The trials were also held in a very systematic way, using the marking system, providing equal opportunity for the participants to showcase their true potential," Narang was quoted as saying in a press release.

Narang, also the vice-president of the Indian Olympic Association (IOA), praised the government's role and its investment in various developmental schemes that benefit athletes.

“Just a few years ago, the shooting scenario was dominated by other nations. But now Indian shooters are finishing in top ranking across all major events, which is the biggest sign of our growth in the sport.

“This stark improvement is a result of government investing in infrastructure that is on-par with international standards, and leading a scientific approach and methodology adopted by Khelo India Scheme at the grassroots stage.”

Narang credited the development of infrastructure across India and a well-equipped coaching staff with in-depth knowledge of international standards for the sport's steady growth.

The Padma Shri awardee and Mission Olympic Cell (MOC) member also appreciated the efforts of MOC and TOPS (Target Olympic Podium) department. Their support in vital areas like equipment and ammunition, foreign exposure, and the provision of support staff and sports science staff plays a crucial role in the high performance of the athletes.
