Syrian Democratic Forces Welcome Formation of Joint Military Council

SDF spokesman Gabriel Kino.

The Kurdish Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF) welcomed the formation of a “transitional military council” to manage the war-torn country during its transition.

SDF spokesman Gabriel Kino said the formation of the council was a main step towards reaching a solution in Syria, stressing it must represent all Syrians.

The SDF is ready to join the body, he added, saying contacts were underway with defected officer Manaf Tlass to reach understandings that satisfy all sides.

He revealed that several rounds of dialogue were held with Tlass to discuss the duties and goals of the council.

“We welcome any move that leads to the solution to the Syrian crisis and brings together all influential parties on the ground,” declared Kino, while criticizing how the SDF and Kurdish autonomous administration have been excluded from international conferences on Syria.

The SDF was formed in the city of al-Qamishli, the northeastern-most point in Syria, in 2015. It now boasts some 110,000 fighters deployed mostly in the region east of the Euphrates River, as well as the cities of Manbij, east of the river, and al-Tabaqa to the south.

Tlass, continued Kino, is a “national figure who is accepted by all sides in Syria … and we have great trust in him.”
