Syrian conflict: Al-Qaeda-linked Nusra Front 'abduct leader of US-backed rebels in Syria'

Al-Nusra and its supporters wishes to rebrand itself as a completely different and more moderate entity than Islamic State (Rex) (Rex)

Nusra Front, a group with links to Al Qaeda, has abducted the leader of a US-backed rebel group in Syria, it has been claimed.

The group ‘Division 30’ released a statement accusing the Nusra Front of abducting group leader Nadim al-Hassan and a number of his companions.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, a UK based group which reports on the conflict, said that the men had been abducted while returning from a meeting to co-ordinate efforts with other factions.

In May, the US launched a programme to train up to 5,400 fighters per year as part of plans to get local partners to combat Isis.

The Nusra Front has approximately five thousand members and aims to establish a state adhering to Islamic beliefs. It has been designated by the US government as a terrorist group.

Last week, Syria President Bashar al-Assad admitted that he has lost control of the control and had 'given up' on some parts of the country.
