Chief negotiator for the Syrian Negotiations Commission Nasr al-Hariri urged on Sunday the United States to assume its responsibility for the repercussions of its decision to withdraw its troops from Syria.
He warned that the “uncalculated” decision will have dangerous consequences, adding that the opposition looks to Saudi Arabia as a main backer to the Syrian people.
Hariri made his remarks from Riyadh where the Commission had held three-day talks to discuss the latest field and political developments in Syria, as well as the latest efforts to form the constitutional committee.
Hariri added that the US withdrawal will lead to Iran-backed militias taking root in areas previously held by American forces.
This will consequently lead to the reemergence of terrorist groups under different guises, he warned.
Moreover, it will pave the way for Iranian militias to practice their terrorism in the region, he stressed.
In addition, Hariri revealed that the new UN envoy to Syria will kick off his mission on Monday and contacts have been held with him over holding a new round of negotiations and pushing forward the political process.
He also underlined the role of Saudi Arabia in backing the Syrian Negotiations Commission.
“Saudi Arabia enjoys a strong presence in northeastern Syria through its efforts to combat terrorism,” he continued.
He said it was not unusual for the Kingdom to stand by Syria “because it is the backbone of the Arab and Muslim ummah.”
