Syphilis cases double in a week in one area of Ireland as outbreak still present

Syphilis cases in the eastern part of the country have more than doubled in the last seven days.

It comes in the wake of an outbreak of the STI earlier in 2021.

According to the weekly report from the Health Protection Surveillance Centre (HPSC), 29 cases of the infection were recorded in the HSE East area - which consists of Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow.

Throughout the rest of Ireland, just seven cases of syphilis were confirmed during week 37 (September 10-17).

The week prior, September 5 to September 11, there was 12 syphilis cases reported in Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow.

Just three cases of the infection were identified throughout the rest of Ireland during the same week.

Earlier this year, a syphilis outbreak was confirmed in the capital as cases skyrocketed.

But it is not the only sexually transmitted infection affecting Dublin, DublinLive reports.

Last week Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow saw a total of 202 cases of STI's/STD's: 102 chlamydia, 47 gonorrhoea, 16 genital herpes, 7 HIV, 1 trichomoniasis and 29 syphilis.

So far this year, there has been 4,633 reported STI's in the HSE East area.

In all of 2020 there was 474 identified cases of syphilis in Dublin, Kildare and Wicklow.

So far this year, there has been 446 confirmed cases of the infection in the area.
